The puma (Puma concolor) is often referred to as a
cougar, mountain lion or panther belongs to the order Carnivora and the family
Felidae. Native to the American continent, pumas are found as far north as Canada
and as far south as the Andes.
A solitary animal, the puma sticks to high mountainous and
rocky regions with plenty of brush for hiding and hunting. The puma is a
capable predator and enjoys a meat based diet that includes antelope, elk, deer
and sheep. When hungry and in less than ideal conditions, the puma will eat
insects and rodents.
Distinguishing features of the puma include a large feline
head, powerful limbs and retractable claws. The average puma is eight foot in
length and just over two feet in height. Despite having no natural enemies (if
we exclude humans through hunting), the puma is not king of its habitat and
competes with the bear and wolf for prey.
